Insights From Tom Dippel, Managing Director, and Charlotte Peyraud, Co-Head of Sustainability Advisory Services
In 2023, private equity investors secured a historic $57.5 billion in new capital earmarked for climate infrastructure. 2024 is off to a strong start, with new raises and high-profile acquisitions, including BlackRock’s purchase of Global Infrastructure Partners for $12.5 billion and General Atlantic’s acquisition of Actis.*
As metrics become more standardized, with initiatives like the ESG Data Convergence Initiative, the approach to ESG is evolving beyond focusing on impact funds to becoming mainstream, with GPs and strategic buyers incorporating ESG-related practices into their strategies. |
Most sponsors now consider ESG due diligence an essential step in their investment committee processes, though to a varying extent. While LPs often drive the tracking and reporting aspect, GPs recognize the importance of monitoring and enhancing performance. There is also an increasing focus on sellside positioning to align with the sustainability performance expectations of target funds and corporate buyers.
