Our fall conference season was a resounding success, with the Global Business Services and Global Tech conferences in New York City, and the European Consumer, Food & Retail Conference in London. We were delighted to host more than 200 participating companies and a strong contingent of international sponsor attendees between the three conferences.

- The breadth and depth of this year's presenting companies; There were a number of subsectors represented and, in many cases, multiple presenting companies in each subsector.

- The overall sentiment among sponsors was an expectation of a continued muted tech M&A environment for the balance of the calendar year, but there was an optimistic outlook for a return to growth in early 2024.

“Is the consumer sector still hot?” That's the question many financial sponsors are asking in the context of the European M&A environment. The answer can be summarized by the overwhelming turnout of 800+ attendees at our recent European Consumer, Food & Retail Conference in London. With themes ranging from health and sustainability to circular businesses reshaping consumption, the key takeaways from the event are:

- The consumer sector is reinvigorated, with a strong focus on sustainability and branded products. However, investors are approaching due diligence with caution.
- Margins take precedence over growth.
- Daily essentials like pet food, baby products, health protection, and well-being are the top priorities for investors.
Both strategics and financial sponsors were impressed by the strong financial performance of presenting companies across various themes. They highlighted the agility demonstrated in navigating through challenges like COVID-19 and ongoing political circumstances. During the targeted one-on-one meetings with participating companies, three main questions emerged:
- What sets your offering apart from others?
- How scalable is your business in international markets while retaining a strong domestic market share?
- Will premium products outperform mainstream ones?
In conclusion, the consumer sector continues to pique the interest of the financial sponsor community, albeit with a more cautious stance. Businesses are demonstrating resilience and adaptability in the ever-evolving macroeconomic landscape.
